Service Learning

Service learning has become a critical component of several of my courses. I have integrated service learning activities into my courses because I feel it connects the student to community partners using real-world skills, and thereby benefiting both the student and community. In the past two decades, over 1,200 students have logged nearly 18,000 service hours on service learning projects.

The video above highlights the Husky Re-Cycle Program. Students in my Senior Project class collected donated bicycles and refurbished them for use at one of the residence halls on campus. Residents of Lawrence Hall can sign out a bike, a helmet, and a lock at no cost. It is just another example of creative, hard-working students designing, developing, and completing great projects which promote sustainability at St. Cloud State University.

Another project highlights a collaboration effort between my Senior Project class and the Whitefish Area Property Owner's Association (WAPOA). Conner Smith worked with WAPOA in an effort to publish water quality data in a use GIS enabled map.

My Service

I have been active on a number of professional and civic committees and advisory boards, as well as involved in community outreach with regard to environmental and STEM matters. Notably, I currently serve as the director of outreach on the board of the Whitefish Area Property Owners Association (WAPOA), one of the largest lake stewardship associations in Minnesota. I also served on the board of directors of the Friends of the Sauk River for over a past decade, and I am actively involved in area water festivals for elementary school children.
